Our Fight: The Type 2 Diabetes Epidemic

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE DIABETES EPIDEMIC

  • Lack of access, opportunities and resources for Native American youth to participate in physical activity programming
  • Diet of Poverty: Members of poor households cannot typically afford or access enough high-quality food and end up eating nutritionally risky diets—a leading cause of type 2 diabetes
  • Lack of education about type 2 diabetes risk factors and the importance of good nutrition and physical activity

ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY AND DIABETES

  • Medical spending on adults attributed to obesity topped approximately $147 billion in 2008 and $3 billion per year in direct medical costs for children
  • Tribal communities and the federally funded Indian Health Service spend $15,000 to $184,000 per year on individuals on the clinical care associated with type 2 diabetes
  • According to the World Health Organization, by 2025, tribes will spend up to 40% of their annual budgets on diabetes care, while the U.S. government will spend 16% of the total annual budget on diabetes-related care
