NUTRITION EDUCATION, ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOODS AND WELLNESS
Diet-related diseases like type 2 diabetes are caused largely by the long-term destruction of the traditional diet of Native Americans and the substitution of a “diet of poverty.” This dangerous trend demands our immediate attention.
The mission of the NB3 Foundation Health and Wellness Program is to create successful nutrition and health education programming with the result of reducing the incidences of type 2 diabetes and childhood obesity.
The NB3 Foundation Health and Wellness Program will be comprised of 4 major approaches:
- Nutrition Education: Implement culturally appropriate and community-based nutrition education programs to increase knowledge and foster healthy eating habits
- Access to Healthy Foods: Create alliances with tribal and non-tribal partners to increase access to healthy and affordable foods
- Leadership Development: Implement a community leadership program that will create a cadre of grassroots community diabetes prevention champions that will foster long-term community change
- Research: Conduct research with partners such as the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health to evaluate the impact of NB3 Foundation community-based nutrition education and physical activity programs
A HEALTHIER FUTURE FOR NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH
An integrated approach of research, community and culturally appropriate nutrition education and access to healthy and affordable foods is needed in the fight to overcome the serious health issues that face Native American children. This approach, coupled with providing quality physical activity programming, can serve as a game-changer in the fight against type 2 diabetes.
