TURNING THE TIDE: NB3 JUNIOR GOLF

Golf, both as a sport and industry, has grown in Indian Country. Today, there are more than 70 tribally owned golf courses.  Moreover, the accomplishments of Native American golfers such as Notah Begay III and Rickie Fowler (Navajo)—trailblazers for Native Americans in the sport—have been a source of tremendous inspiration.

As a result, there are new and exciting academic and career pathways within golf for Native American youth. The NB3 Foundation is in a unique position to provide access and opportunities for Native American youth to fulfill their potential through the sport and industry of golf. The NB3 Foundation’s goal is to provide the opportunity for Native American youth to be introduced to the sport of golf with the underlying mission to educate youth on the prevention of type 2 diabetes and leverage the opportunities for leadership development that are inherent in the game. Golf provides character development and confidence while promoting healthy lifestyles for the Native American youth.

OUR APPROACH

This year, the NB3 Junior Golf Program will implement a variety of model programs through community outreach, summer junior golf academies and grantmaking to help grow the game in Indian Country. Our goal is to create pipelines of program engagement and capacity for tribal communities and tribal schools to access and grow the game of golf. Through our various levels of programs, participants will not only have the opportunity to excel competitively, but also achieve improved health and leadership development. Our goal in the coming year is to serve 2,000 Native youth junior golfers.
