ALARMING TRENDS

  • 1 of every 3 children born since the year 2000 are expected to develop diabetes during their lifetime.

Among Native Americans, it is projected that 1 of every 2 children will develop diabetes

  • A recent study of over 11,000 children on 12 reservations found that:

44%  of Native American five-year olds are overweight

24% of Native American five-year olds are obese

  • 61% of Pueblo children in New Mexico are overweight or obese

  • Today, Native children as young as 4 years old are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes whereas during the previous decade, type 2 diabetes was only common among 40-somethings

  • There was a 68% increase in diabetes from 1994 to 2004 in Native American youth ages 15-19 years

  • Obese or overweight children lead to obese adults who are on track to live a short life filled with illness, type 2 diabetes and associated health complications that result in a poor quality of life

  • The death rate of Native Americans with diabetes is 3 times higher than the general U.S. population

  • At least 30% of all Native Americans are pre-diabetic, meaning they are a step away from contracting type 2 diabetes
